Portmahomack is inside the Moray Firth cSAC (Candidate Marine Special Area of Conservation).
Pods of dolphins live in the area and can occasionally be observed from land. The best view is obtained from the water on one of the organised Dolphin Watching trips. One operator works from the harbour in Portmahomack.

At appropriate times of the year other marine mammals vist the area including Minke whales.

The area is home to lots of land and sea birds and major migrations occur at various times of the year.
