Portmahomack and Easter Ross have strong connections to the early Picts. Throughout the area, you
can find standing stones with early pagan and christian carving. The Tarbat Discovery Center documents an important
archaeological dig going on right in the middle of the village. Important discoveries have shown that
an early Pictish monastery once occupied the site - the first ever discovered. A Pictish Trail has been
established to guide visitor to the more important sites.
If personal history is more to your interest, there are many geneology and research resources in the area including the Highland
Archives in Inverness and the military archives at Fort George. This Jacobite-era fort houses Highland regimental
archives and is still an active military base.
